"In the beginning the world appeared to mankind like a fairytale;everything that lay beyond the circle of the familiar experience was a shifting cladland of the fancy;a playground for all the fabled beings of mythology." Nansen, In Northen Mists, 1911

Artist Statement

As an artist I am constantly questioning the world around me. My work allows me to seek out answers and forge bridges to the unknown. Although I work in many different materials, a similar story is often told within the narration of what I create; with this I allow my subconscious to unravel. In each new piece of work it is the shift in illusion which excites me; whether it be using the shiny surface of boiled sweets to represent glass or allowing mirrors to reflect and confuse a normally calm exterior.

With each new endeavour I become more intrigued with what I perceive to be real, and with how I can push the mundane to the mystical. Through my work I want to captivate and surprise; to raise questions of what is to be human and to consider the fragile worlds that envelope us.

The nature of my work enables me to utilize quizzical decisions, allowing me the freedom to venture down many different avenues of thought and to approach new concepts with an element of risk regarding the end result. In the past two years I have given myself more permission to be guided by impulse and intuition, this in turn has allowed a new found playfulness in which I relish the unpredictable nature of my own imagination. The materials I use are valid storytelling elements, and are as important as the final work. By using familiar objects of the everyday I am hoping to tap into memories and emotions; in doing so creating a correspondence between the intangible and the commonplace.

I am currently working on ‘Grotto’, a piece that has been inspired by Outsider Art and the psyche. The notion of art that has been created outside the boundaries of official culture intrigues me. In ‘Grotto’, thousands of jigsaw puzzle pieces have been collected from charity shops and individually stuck together in a random construct to create an organic, rock like formation, which will become the outer and inner layers of this installation. ‘Grotto’ has been an on-going project for more than two years; a labour of love which daily challenges me to trust my creative impulses and instincts, considering the way I approach my own practice and what it means to make art.
